Pocahontas
Pocahontas was born in 1595 in Werowocomoco a small village in Virginia. She was raised by her father chief Powhatan the chief of Algonquian Indians. The Algonquian Indians were the Indians of the tribe Werowocomoco. Pocahontas's real name at birth was Matoaka but she reffered to herself as Pocahontas which means " Little Wanton" a creative, playful little girl. As Pocahontas grew older she met many Englishmen who came here from England to settle in Jamestown. One of them included captain John Smith. When Smith was captured by the Algonquian indians and sentenced to stretch on 2 stones to eventually break all his bones and die by the hed chief of the werewocomoco tribe chief Powhatan Pocahontas sacrafised herself to save him and later they would become friends.Pocahontas would send messages to the colonists saying that the Algonquians would bring food and furs to trade for materials such as hatchets and trinkets. Pocahontas stopped visiting the colonists when she found out that in October 1609 Smith was badly injured during a gunpowder insident and forced to go back to his hometown England for treatment. The next time Pocahontas came to visit she was informed that her trustworthy friend had passed away. Pocahontas apparently married an Indian by the name of kocoum in 1610 he was a "pryvate captayne". Now living in Potomac with the Indians Pocahontas still had no intension of not having a relationship with Englishmen. An Englishmen by the name of Captain Samuel Argall knew where Pocahontas was and he planed to kidnap her and put her up for ransom. When he lured her into his ship he informed Powhatan that he had his daughter and she would only be let go if Powhatan freeded the English prisoners that he had kept. Powhantan informed Argall that they should treat Pocahontas nicely and later in April 1613 Pocahontas was free. In July 1613 Pocahontas fell in love with a successful tobacco planter by the name of John Rolfe. They would become married on April 5, 1614 after Powhatan finally agreed on letting Pocahontas marry and Englishmen. A peice started between the English and Indians after this marriage. After almost 3 years into the marriage between Rolfe and Pocahontas, Rolfe decide to move back with his family in Virgina in March 1617 and thats when the two would set sail. Unfourtanetly Pocahontas became very ill from pneumonia or tuberculosis and was going to pass away. She was rested ashore and comforted by her husband before she finally passed. Pocahontas was at the age of 22 when she died. She will be forever a huge part in American history.
