Captain John Smith
Now Captain Smith, who all this time from their departure from the Canaries was restrained as a prisoner upon the scandalous suggestions of some of the chiefs (envying his repute) who fained he intended to usurp the government, murder the council, and make himself king, that his confederates were dispersed in all the three ships, and that divers of his confederates that revealed it, would affirm it; for this he was committed as a prisoner.
John Smith was born in 1580 in Willoughby, England. He left his home at the age of 16 after his father pased away. Smith started his expeditions by joining volunteers in France who were fighting for independence of the Dutch from Spain. Smith later would become very active with the plans by the Virgina Company to colonize Virgina for profit. After setting sail on December 20, 1606 it would take his 3 British small ships about 5 months due to the harsh weather conditions to finally reach the colonie known as Virgina in April, 1607. On May 13, 1607 the settlers landed at Jamestown ready to begin a new life. Winter was very rough for the settlers disease spread, there was a lack of freshwater, and the Algonquian indians made life very difficult for the settlers. The Algonquians would invade the settlers area and steal valuable materials like gunpowder and pistols. John Smith became leader of the colonists and did whatever he could do to fight of the indians. John Smith and other Englishmen were ambushed by multiple Algonquians which they would be taken back to there leader chief Powhatan and later killed. Chief Powhatan was very impressed with Smiths self-confidence. Smith was questioned about his colony and was later sentenced to take part in a trial. Captain John Smith was in captivity for over 4 weeks before he was released. Smith was saved from death by the 11 year old daughter of chief Powhatan named Pocahontas. When Smith returned he discovered that many colonists had deserted and there were a lack of supplies. Personal conflicts between Smith and other various leaders made John Smith leave Jamestown to explore the Chesapeake bay region and find desprately needed food supplies. Smith was later elected president of the local council in September 1608 due to the poor government. Smith would enforce strict discipline , strengthened defenses, and he encouraged farming. He quoted that "He who does not work, will not eat". His strong leadership grew and survived the settlement the next year. Unfourtanetly Smith had a severe gun powder burn injury and had to reaturn to England for treatment in october 1609, Smith would never reaturn to England. The former captain was forbidden to return to America. Smith would later pass away in 1631 at the age of 51.
